Change Detection Presentation to the Ministry of Environment

On the 12th of September 2024, Sharon Uhiaro (MMGB Mapping officer) had the opportunity to present on change detection technology to the Ministry of Environment, emphasizing the critical role in monitoring and conserving our forest conservation sites. Change detection is pivotal, because it provides real time data to assess alterations in land cover over time, providing valuable insights into environmental changes and impacts.

During the presentation, she highlighted the functions of change detection, stressing its ability to detect deforestation, land use changes, and habitat loss. These changes are crucial indicators of environmental health and sustainability, aligning closely with our goals at (MMGB) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to ensure the preservation of our natural resources.

At MMGB, we utilize change detection extensively in our forest conservation efforts. By comparing satellite imagery from different time periods, we can pinpoint areas experiencing significant changes in vegetation cover or land use. This information helps the organisation and its members to prioritize areas for conservation interventions, identify illegal logging activities, and assess the effectiveness of our conservation strategies.

Moreover, change detection supports evidence-based decision-making and policy formulation. By presenting accurate data on environmental changes, we empower stakeholders like the Ministry of Environment, rangers, environment activists to implement targeted measures for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management.

Overall, the presentation was well-received, with discussions centered on enhancing collaboration between MMGB and the Ministry of Environment to strengthen our monitoring and enforcement capabilities. Questions and answer session was also conducted after the presentation as well as informal interactions between different stakeholders to understand what their aspirations regarding the use of the change detector tool are. As a way forward, she’s keen on integrating feedback and advancing the efforts in using change detection as a vital tool for environmental stewardship and forest conservation in the region.
